Funeral services for Floy Bain were held on October 25, 2006. Pastor Chansy Charles officiated at the service at the First Congregational Church in Plentywood; interment was in Plentywood Memorial Cemetery. Casketbearers were Gary & Julie Lee, Bill & Rosemarie Lord, Gaylen & Kathie Marsh, Curt & Myrt Overby, Ron & Sharon Engstrom, and Leroy & Lola Rusbult. Recognized as "Very special" honorary bearers were Sheila (Kisler) Pierson, Linda (Smith) Bartnes, and Grace (Smith) Anderson; Honorary Bearers were Joan Ross, Millie Marsh, Morris Nelson, Randy Kisler, Jim Kisler, Don & Judy Benson, the children of Sylvester & Rita Gross, the Ladies of the Phoebe Circle, and the Staff of both Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home and LaCasa Personal Care. Ushers were Walt & Shirley Nelson. Floy was 94; she died Thursday evening, October 19, at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood.

The daughter of Ray and Hulda (Berg) Mensing, Floy was born at Flaxton, North Dakota February 3, 1912. The family moved to northeastern Montana and lived at Plentywood and Comertown before settling finally in Plentywood. As a teenager, Floy started working;  first for the Matkin family near Redstone; and later at for the Michels and Louis Marsh families. She graduated from Plentywood high school in 1932, and started working for Doc Gustafson's, cleaning and cooking. She married Ralph Bain at Scobey August 25, 1934. They lived in a little house in Plentywood; and Floy continued to work for Doc Gustafson's, for Iva Koser, and various others, cooking and cleaning. Later, Ralph and Floy worked for Archie Mann's and made their first real home at the Mann Ranch. They later purchased their own farm 10 miles southwest of Plentywood. Even though their home was only 3 rooms, there was always room for visiting family; and Floy made sure no one went away hungry and made room for one more. She and Ralph were always together, working on their farm, visiting with neighbors, and simply enjoying their life together. When neighbors were having babies, Floy was always there to take care of their older children as long as she was needed, this sometimes being several weeks at a time. This was one of Floy's fondest memories taking care of these neighbor kids, and she often spoke of them with laughter and tears. Ralph made all the decisions: he even bought a house in Plentywood one day, then came home and told Floy they were moving! Floy was always easy-going, even- tempered, and content. Never in a rush herself, she often lamented that "people don't ever want to visit anymore!" and ". . . What's your hurry?" She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, who loved to visit and play with her grandchildren, making sure there were cookies baked for them. After retirement, she and Ralph enjoyed the Golden Years Club, visiting, and RV camping with "the Traveleers." After Ralph's death September 7, 1994, Floy made her home at the Pioneer Manor until she moved to LaCasa, and then to the nursing home May 6, 2004. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, and as long as she was able she was active in Phoebe Circle of the Ladies Aid.

Floy is survived by her son, Larry, and his wife Doreen, on the family farm; by two granddaughters: Kim Bain, of Dickinson, North Dakota and Shellee Roberts and her husband Gregory, of Show Low, Arizona; and two great-grandsons, Mitchell and John Brock Roberts. She is also survived by two sisters, Elvira Sollid and her husband Allan, of Woodburn, Oregon; and Jean Peressini and her husband Adolph, of Great Falls, Montana and a special sister-in-law, Rose Mensing, of Dixon, Missouri, and by several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Roy ("Bud") Mensing, and sisters Delores, in childhood, and Deone Crow.

Funeral services for Elida Trowbridge were held on October 23, 2006. Pastor David C. Curtright officiated at the service at Plentywood Lutheran Church; interment was in Plentywood Memorial Cemetery. Casketbearers were Tom Ferguson, Mike Hallesy, Roger Schwanz, Dale and Jeff Soderquist, and Bill Trowbridge. All of Elida's family and friends were regarded as Honorary Bearers; ushers were Richard Rice and Leonard Severson. Elida died early Tuesday morning, October 17 at the hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota; she was 70.

Elida Ann was born July 18, 1936 in Bainville, Montana; the daughter of Edward and Erna (Wetenkamp) Brunner. She grew up and attended schools there, and started cooking at the State Line Club when she was 18; and was known for her cooking skills all of her life. She enjoyed good food and  good company with it. Although she didn’t like to bake, she was a life-long master of the perfectly done steak, and even family gatherings always seemed to feature Elida in charge of the food!

In 1957, Elida moved to Plentywood to work at the Blue Moon night club. Although she later returned to Bainville to take over the family restaurant and worked with her brother Hons in his bar for a time, she returned to Plentywood.  She married Merle Trowbridge in 1967; they made their home in Plentywood until Merle’s death February 27, 1993. Elida cooked at the Blue Moon for Aubrey Ferguson until she started at the Golden Wheel for Ned Chandler in 1973, and stayed when Dennis Paulbeck took it over as Dr. Debelle’s. For a time she also cooked at the Montana Pioneer Manor.

Elida  retired in September 2003 and moved to Minnesota. She stayed with her daughter, Lynn, at Richfield for a while, then moved to Crosby, Minnesota two years ago.

She loved TV, especially Emeril and old-time movies, reading romance novels (Danielle Steele was a favorite), working puzzle books, and just enjoying small-town life. Red was Elida’s color; and she always seemed “dressed up” with her hair done, earrings, and jewelry.

Elida is survived by her daughter, Lynn Trowbridge, of Richfield, Minnesota; three stepchildren, Bill Trowbridge, of Aurora, Colorado;  Shawn Trowbridge, of Missoula; and  Carla Trowbridge, of Mountain View, California. She is also survived by three brothers, Ellis Brunner, of Hamilton, Montana; Eldred Brunner, of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Elwyn Brunner, of Forsyth, Montana; and six sisters: Ellen Thomas, of Missoula, Montana; Eleanora Russell, of Hesperia, California; Elma Ceartin, of Plentywood; Elizabeth Pickinpaugh, of Douglas, Wyoming; Elverna Nelson, of Outing, Minnesota; and Elona Soderquist, of Plentywood. Also surviving are many beloved nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Elton, Elroy, and Edward; and two sisters, Elda Brunner and Elaine Miller.

Funeral services for Cecil A. Garneau were held on October 21, 2006. Father Marcel Vogel officiated at the service at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Plentywood; interment was in Redstone Cemetery. A vigil service was held on Friday at Fulkerson Memorial Chapel in Plentywood. Recognized as Honorary Bearers were the members of the Plentywood Council, Knights of Columbus, Jim & Kay Jensen, Leonard & Sammie Smith, Phyllis Granning, Lucille Gray, Harold Krogstad, and Saralda Nathe. Afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease, Cecil entered the Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in 1993, where he died early Tuesday morning, October 17.

The son of Cecil E. and Delphine (Linder) Garneau, Cecil was born at Redstone October 5, 1934. He grew up on the family farm in the Redstone community attended schools there, and farmed as long as his health allowed.

Cecil made strong commitments to his land and cattle, his family, and his church. A hard-working man, he was able to lie down and fall deeply asleep, then wake refreshed and immediately get back to work!

Always outgoing and young at heart, he loved children, and never knew a stranger – he loved to visit, and immediately became good friends with everyone he met!

A devoted member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, he served as a Eucharistic minister, and loved to take communion to and visit with shut-ins and patients at the hospital and nursing home. An avid member of the Knights of Columbus, Cecil was always a participant in church activities throughout northeastern Montana.

Quietly generous, he would help anyone in need in ways that were usually unseen, but deeply appreciated.

Cecil was known as a self-taught musician who played many instruments, especially the accordion, piano, and guitar; and was a member of the “Moonlight Ramblers” dance band with Gene Enghusen and Al Kaschube. He didn’t read music, but could pick up any tune with unmatched enthusiasm!

Cecil married Dianne Hanson October 15, 1960; they made their home with their five sons and one daughter on the farm south of Redstone until their marriage ended in 1989. A common love of music and their Catholic faith brought Cecil and Teresa (Goroski) Nistler together; they were married November 30, 1991, combining a family of 15 children and numerous grandchildren! Soon after, Alzheimer’s disease led to Cecil’s declining health, and he entered the nursing home May 5, 1994.

Cecil is survived by his wife, Teresa, of Plentywood; five sons: Pat and his wife, Julie, of Wibaux, Montana; Les, of Williston, North Dakota; Robin, of Elko, Nevada; Michael and his wife LaDonna, of Sheridan Wyoming; and Chris and his wife Tara, of Bismarck, North Dakota; and by one daughter, Alane O’Dore and her husband Michael, of Joliet, Montana. He was very generous with his smiles and encouragement, and was always ready to help anyone in any way he could. He said he was so lucky to have Mike living with him and looked forward to Shelby's summer visits. We all love you, Dad..

A funeral service for Theodore Lagerquist was held on September 29, 2006 at Plentywood Lutheran Church in Plentywood.  Pastors Barb Westhoff and Dave Curtright officiated and burial was at Plentywood Memorial Cemetery.  Ted, 85, died September 23, 2006 in Plentywood.

Theodore Lagerquist was born on June 12th , 1921 on his parents homestead southwest of Westby, Montana.  His father was a Swedish immigrant and his mother was a Norwegian from Minnesota.  Throughout his life, he had been called Theodore, Ted, Teddy, and Lager.  Ted attended grade school at a local one room school.  After he had completed the 8th grade, he went to work on the farm and at a local coal mine with his dad.

Ted married Muriel Ruth Myars on April 10, 1943 in Plentywood, Montana.  They made their home in rural Westby, in 1952 they moved to Plentywood, only to return to living on the farm in 1976.  They stayed on the farm until moving to the Pioneer Manor in Plentywood in 1995, then due to failing health they moved to Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in 2001.  Muriel preceded Ted on January 12, 2005.

Ted and Muriel enjoyed square dancing and attending Fiddlers Jams to dance to the old time music.  He also enjoyed playing horseshoe, the bean bag game and gardening especially growing potatoes and strawberries.  He was a stern man but also very gentle and fair.  He enjoyed visiting and helping others.  He always wanted the best for his family.  He will be remembered for his quick wit and his one liners as he always had a good joke to tell.  Though later in his life, he could not do the hard work of being a farmer, he still shared his strong character with others around him.   The trials of his life built him into the great character of the man he became and he passed that on to his children.  He was game for anything when it came to his grandchildren.  He would play games for hours and tease the grandchildren about who was ahead.

Ted is survived by his son Allan (Rhoda) Lagerquist at Surrey, ND; daughters, Linda (Ralph) Heppner and Myrnette (Glenn) Miller at Plentywood; and sister Anna and brother Joel of Westby, Helmer at Plentywood, Manford at Williston, ND.  He is also survived by grandchildren; Ted Lagerquist, Terry Lagerquist, Troy (Susan) Heppner of Olathe, KS; and Megan, Tommy, Michael and Jack; Tricia Brenteson and Blake and Brittany & friend Keith Berezay (Brittany)  all of Plentywood; Ty Heppner of Plentywood; Lanae (Al) Laurias and family of Billings; Scott Miller; Michelle (Neil) August and Hallie and Hannah; Josh Miller.  He was preceded in death by his wife Muriel, his parents, brothers Sig, Elvin, Raymond and Joel Arnold.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be given to Westby Lutheran Church, Plentywood Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall Fund, Sheridan Memorial Hospice or the charity of your choice.

Interment followed the services at the Plentywood Memorial Cemetery. Pall Bearers were Bob’s nephews, with his nieces and all of his friends recognized as honorary bearers. Ushers were Peewee Robertson, Don Quam, Ardith Huffman, and Gordon Garrick. Bob, 74, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, September 23, 2006 with his loving wife Betty at his side, after a brief but valiant battle with cancer.

Bob was born on November 7, 1931 at the family home of his grandparents, George and Effie Peele north of Westby, Montana. He was raised on the family farm near Comertown, Montana by his parents, Howard and Opal McCall. He graduated from Comertown High School as the Valedictorian of the class 1949 and joined the Air Force with his life-long friend and cousin Colby Granvold in 1951. He served in Korea and French Morocco in North Africa with the 1603rd Support Unit and was discharged in 1955. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Occupation Medal, the Germany Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, and the U.N. Ribbon. He also served in the Montana National Guard.

Bob married his high school sweetheart, Betty Olson on August 29, 1952. They moved to Holyoke, Massachusetts where Bob was stationed in the Air Force and they returned to Plentywood in 1954 where Betty and their new son Mickey stayed while Bob was sent overseas until his discharge in 1955. After his return they moved to Comertown to farm and then moved to Plentywood in 1960. During the 46 years he lived in Plentywood Bob worked as a mail carrier, Postmaster, bartender, musician, trash collector, dry cleaner, and drayman. He was employed by Frank Frazier Dray Line, the Moose Lodge, the Elks Club, the Vet’s Club, the Spot Bar, and he and Betty owned the Sheridan Sanitation and Dray Line, and the Sheridan Launderama.

In 1965 Bob began his 27 year career with the U.S. Postal Service in Plentywood, and was named Postmaster in 1973. He held this position until his retirement in 1991.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the American Legion, a charter member of the Plentywood Elks Lodge, and a member of the Moose Lodge. He served on the VFW Honor Guard for many years, and marched hundreds of miles over the years proudly displaying the American Flag in parades and other services honoring Veterans of the United States Military Forces.

In 1953 Bob purchased his first guitar and was a prominent musician and singer in the area for over 40 years. He played and sang with the likes of Gordon Garrick, Tim Syme, Bob Durbin, Bob Garrick, Ray Burtleson, and Glen “Sachmo” Garrick in bands like “The Melody Four”, “The Twilight Trio”, “The Western Rainbows”, and the “Twilighters”. He also participated in many jam sessions over the years and owned more guitars than he did radios.

Bob was an avid reader, often devouring a new book in a matter of hours. He read every single issue of the U. S. News and World Report, and was constantly tuned in to CNN and the Weather Channel and had a radio in nearly every room in the house tuned to KPWD (now KATQ) for the latest news. He kept track of all the local weather and the weather where his children and grandchildren lived, as far away as Mississippi,  and would often phone them and warn them of impending bad weather before they heard it on their local weather reports. He had almost as many rain gauges as he had guitars and with his latest electronic guage he could tell you how much rain had fallen in the last 10 minutes.

Bob loved his family with every fiber of his being and was devoted to Betty, the love of his life and wife of 54 years. He will be missed by every one of us, every day, for the rest of our lives.

Robert (“Bob”) Wankel passed away peacefully in his sleep with his wife, Wanda, by his side, Sunday evening, August 20th , at Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Plentywood, of acute renal failure.  Funeral services were held on August 25, 2006; Pastor Chansy Charles officiated at the service at First Congregational Church in Plentywood; interment was at the Huffman - Wankel family cemetery northeast of Raymond. Casketbearers were Norman & Trudy Jensen, Fred & Susan Kavon, Chet & Rita Lindblom, Cecil & Norma McLeod, Roy & Dorothy Melle, Gene & Rosemary Paulson, Morris Nelson, and Tom & Marge Solomon. Bill & Del Johnston served as ushers and all of Bob's friends were recognized as Honorary Bearers.

Robert L. Wankel was born June 29th , 1925 in the homestead house on the farm to Art and Mabel (Huffman) Wankel, the youngest of six children. During grade school in the winter months, early in the morning, he rode his horse down the hill to the Wankel school to start the furnace. He went to college for a time, then came back to farm with his dad, Art, and brother, Merrill. He met Wanda Harris in Great Falls while she was in Cadet nurse corps training and they married December 6, 1947 in Great Falls. They had many good times: ice skating, tobogganing, skiing, and raising their kids in a large extended family: twelve kids at one point lived among the Huffman and Wankel families on the farm.

Bob played and coached the Big and Little Muddy league baseball teams for years; one time when he was pitching, a hard line drive was hit and struck some farmer matches in his pocket and lit them on fire ... a real hot pocket! He was a dedicated Twins fan and loved baseball beyond description! Also an avid reader, he read everything, but especially “Ann Perry” mystery novels. Listening to opera was also a favorite pastime for him. Crossword puzzles, occupied a lot of his time. His kids remember playing ping-pong with him and how he loved to slam the ball! He hit it so hard is usually broke or missed the table. He hunted deer and antelope with his sons Mark and Mike, and enjoyed goose hunting in Canada with friends.

Bob was a member of the 1st Congregational church in Plentywood, and, in the past, in various other farm organizations.

Bob is survived by his wife, Wanda; children Mike Wankel and his wife Sandy, and Diane Chandler and her husband, Alan; also by sisters-in-law Bonne Perry of Sidney and Cleone Wankel of Plentywood. He is also survived by Mike’s children Meghan and Mallory, of Toronto, who grew up on the farm with Bob; Diane’s children Gwen Budd (Kenny), Daniel, Tyler, and Dillan, of Moorhead, Minnesota; Joey (Tracie) Mason and Hudson Chandler, of Rural Plentywood; Billy Chandler (Daughter Angelina) of Belgrade, Montana; Bobby Chandler, of Belgrade, and Bonne Chandler, of Plentywood. Also surviving are sisters Katie Zeidler of Plentywood and Muriel George of Hamilton, Montana and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Mabel Wankel; son, Mark, who died October 23, 1999; father-in-law Glenn Harris; sisters Wynona Kenney (Joe), Joyce Fortner (Ed), brother, Merrill, two nephews Jerry and Pat Kenney; and brothers-in-law Barr Zeidler and Walter George.

Bob and Wanda traveled much over the years, all around Montana, visiting family and friends. They especially enjoyed the Fort Peck Summer Theater. Bob was a funny, kind man who graciously welcomed people into his home. We’d grown “accustomed to his face” and will miss him.

Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood had charge of arrangements.
